Episode 11, Season 2 | November 10, 2021
It seems like everyone is talking about mindfulness these days. A quick Google search results in 9 Ways to Practice Mindfulness, 16 Types of Meditation and 28 Ways to Practice Mindfulness for Beginners. There is so much out there. So what is mindfulness, really, and does it even make a difference? Do I have to empty my head of all my thoughts, and sit cross-legged on the floor in a zen-like state? Listen in to this podcast episode as we talk with Jennifer Salomon, Occupational Therapist at CHC about the physiology of mindfulness and practical ways to be more present (even for skeptics). Because “as soon as we tune in and recognize that we're not being mindful, we're already being mindful.”
Jennifer obtained a bachelor’s degree in Psychology with a minor in Child Adolescent & Mental Health Studies from New York University. She continued on to finish her master’s degree in Occupational Therapy at University of Southern California in Los Angeles. Most recently, Jennifer completed her doctoral residency while at the University of Southern California University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. Jennifer’s work here focused on individual OT and interdisciplinary consultation, assessment, and treatment for a caseload of children and adolescents with a range of behavioral needs and co-occurring mental health diagnoses. She also had the opportunity to participate in interdisciplinary clinics and lead groups with co-therapists from other disciplines. Jennifer continues to incorporate her passions and interest in mental health and developmental disabilities in her current work through a collaborative, culturally-competent and family-centered approach. She believes that treatment should be tailored to a child’s personal strengths and challenges in order for effective change to be had. In her free time, Jennifer loves spending time with her loved ones, exploring the outdoors and tending to her plants!
